When did you start making your goodies? Under the Tattered Rags name since April 2004... though I have been altering/making dolls since I was a kid.

What is your Favorite thing about selling your handmade items? The satisfaction I feel each time one of my dolls reaches it's destination and makes someone's day brighter. I have always had an unrelenting desire to create and having found the world of Art Dolls and how personal and meaningful they are to their buyers fills my creative cup to the rim!

What are your plans for the future? I'll be here in my little studio cranking out more dolls!

Artist of the Week: Dreadful Things

I love a dark and Gothic Christmas! Always have. My home always looks like Halloween anyways, but when I add my white tree with black lights and purple and black ornaments, it gives it that special glow, just perfect for the Holidays.
Looking at Raven's store and her holiday items are a perfect match. With her holiday greeting cards and wreath. Everything is awesome even for gifts like the cross and bone neclace. SO this week I present you:

Raven Young from Dreadful Things

When did you start making your goodies?
My parents were both artists so it was only natural I would become a creative spirit. I began painting as a child and sewing/jewelry making as a teenager. I started out sewing and crafting as a teen because I did not enjoy the clothing sold in stores and wanted to create items for myself that had a dark edge. I took pride in wearing items that no one else could. In my teens and early 20s people began asking me if I could make similar items to sell. For a long time I refused to make and sell items for people because I was so protective of my look and style. I was fearful that somehow I would lose part of my identity if others wore my creations. I finally grew a brain and started to sell to the public when I realized I could make money at it (duh!). I only started selling my Gothic themed holiday cards to the public about two years ago. I had offers from card companies to buy the designs but figured I would try to sell them on my own first.

Where can people buy your stuff?
My paintings are usually only offered when I do gallery showings but I put a few on ETSY from time to time. My other items (cards, jewelry, home decor) are mainly sold on Etsy. I sometimes vend at alternative craft shows, clubs, pagan events. Some people have even contacted me via Twitter, livejournal or facebook for sales. The best way to get a taste of my work is to check out my store "Dreadful Things By Raven" on Etsy.

What is your Favorite thing about selling your handmade items?
I get so much pleasure out of selling my works to other people. It comforts me to know that others enjoy my creations and want to own them for theirselves. It is also very neat to go to a club in another city and then see someone there is wearing one of my necklaces. For years people have told me that my art and creations were just too strange to find buyers but now I see how very wrong those people are!

What are your plans for the future?
The goal is to be able to quit my day job and do this full time within the next two years. I am also working on getting gallery showing again for my paintings. The greeting card side of my business is always expanding and I plan on finalizing some more contracts with commercial stores soon.

Lastly, Anything you want to add?
Believe in your art and be true to creativity. There is a market for everything and half the battle is just finding the market but do not give up!

I'm also planning to become more active with my writing and hopefully push some products out into the world. I also intend to take classes in my various art forms, so that I can keep on improving.

ok ok!! I know I have not been keeping up on the blogging. Halloween hit hard...I had almost no time to do anything! I made a lot of amazing things for customs and I was very proud of some of them. when did you start making your goodies? I have made things all my life, as a 3rd grader, I took apart my family's only working phone for the pretty wire. But whats more amazing is that I put it all back together in working order when I got in deep do-do. ;)

lastly what are your plans for the future? My plans are to capture the attn of the film industry and hopefully have my own studio space and one employee by the end of next year. I hope to have a modest yet stable client base and be household name for those of use who love dark things.

Any thing you want to add? I have so many ideas and so little time that I literally have notebooks of sketches, names and concepts. Did you know that I usually come up with the name of the piece first? Then I hunt for the right pieces until I find them, even waiting up to a year or more before something is "done" to my standards.

Artist of the Week: The Sacred Oak

The Sacred Oak, she makes me want to go to the Ren faire. Items made for the lords, and for the ladys. From the body to the bath.

When did you start making your goodies?
I started about 10 years ago. I was a lonely seamstress apprentice mostly self tough. The other part I learned in Theater in the Costuming Department. I learned all kinds of prop making and set designing. from there I went to books and online references. When I joined Amtgard my skills became a demand but no one wanted to help pay for it. Amptgard is the padded version of SCA with fantasy flair. We no longer play due to our children and how our local chapter is but in the whole Amtgard is okay.

Where can people buy your stuff? Mostly from my main website, I am on Etsy and Artfire as well. Our OOAK (One Of A Kind) items can be found on Etsy or Artfire. Things we make in duplicates and multiple size's or colors can be found on our main website.
Every First Saturday you can Find The Sacred Oak at Freedom Hill Trade Day just outside of Lufkin Texas (East Texas that is lol).

Lastly what are your plans for the future? To Open a in Person shop again, as well as start up A Ren Fair and A Gothic/Steam punk Fair. I think these types are a dying bread and deserve to be in the spot light. We have dying Arts and Sciences due to advancement of modern society. And for the most part are shunned or over looked. The Alternative world is a major part of our culture and yet is still placed in the darkness and made fun of. I believe its not fair to treat such talents on such a manner.

Any thing you want to add?
That anyone can accomplish anything with Work, Patience, and Determination. In the end it is up to you if you are successful.

Artist of the Week: Mad house mauly

Mauly's work brings me back to when I started out in photography, and even now, it's stuff I would be doing. I love abandon, broken, and forgotten things and stuff with a past. Her stuff has emotions and feels within them. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

when did you start making your goodies?
i started taking pictures when i was about 9 or 10; my mother and maternal grandfather were both photographers. my mother loved to find old, run down cemeteries to explore. i started really getting into photography about the time i met my 2nd husband. he had a digital camera (i couldn't afford one being a single mother) and i loved that i could get immediate results. i could see right away if i was happy with the image instead of spending a fortune on black and white film to find out that it didn't look the way i felt it should. from there it has just evolved over the years.
being nonmedicated bipolar with OCD i tend to obsess over things/hobbies for months and then move to something else, cycling back a few months later. sometimes i am quilting, or embroidering, or crocheting, or creating graphics, or painting, or writing but i will always have my camera with me, wherever i am.

lastly what are your plans for the future?
i have recently gotten more involved in plus sized alt modeling (i am also the photographer, hair stylist, makeup artist and set designer) and hope to create a website for that but i will always always be lurking around the backwoods and crawling through windows of places that i shouldn't be and attempting to document them before they fade into dust.

Artist of the Week: CustomZombie

Looking for Creepy, gothic, Victorian Zombie art. Well her is an awesome start to add to any collection!

When did you start making your goodies?
I made my first custom zombie portrait around 18 months ago. I did it for myself and then, about a year later, a friend inquired about hiring me to do one for them. I created my first two digital prints (Cauldron Bubble and Midnight Dreary) as a Halloween gift last year. Once I had opened my Etsy shop I decided that I could design more and sell them! The pendulums didn’t come about until a few months ago when I saw my husband playing around with a washer on a string. He was practicing a mentalism effect and I thought it would be much more convincing with a better looking pendulum!

Where can people buy your stuff?
All of my items are available in my Etsy shop. My custom zombie portraits can also be purchased on my personal site – www.CustomZombie.com.

Lastly what are your plans for the future?
I hope to one day have a worldwide army of the undead! Seriously though, I want to continue adding new products to my shop and make a nice supplemental income from my art/crafting business. I already own two other businesses (video production and a Mixed Martial Arts gym) and would like this one to be just as big!

I am in love with this artist work! I have personally seen her cute bats, bloomers and feather hat. Her work is extremely well done.

When did you start making your goodies?

I started selling on Etsy in 2007 but I've been actively creating since the 80s! At first for dolls, then myself & other people. I even did a stint as a Seamstress' Assistant at small doll company. I can't stand Valentine's Day/over abundance of hearts to this day because of that place!

Lastly, what are your plans for the future?

Before or after becoming rich, not necessarily famous, and traveling the the world, the universe & beyond? ;D Right now I'm just putting one foot in front of the other and seeing where it takes me all the while doing what I love.

Don't pluck your eyebrows in the dark. Cats can't knit. Men in kilts are way sexier than men in tights. Oh, and I do custom work :)

when did you start making your goodies?
I have been making things as long as I can remember...I used to make found object sculptures... doll clothes, my own clothes... then once I started getting alot of tattoos I made purses so I wouldn't clash with my outfit! Then it branched into Hair accessories which have been doing for just over a year.

Through my Etsy Shop for now, I am working on a cart for my personal tattoo website so everything can be located in 1 place... I will still keep some items in my etsy shop but the bulk will be through www.jammerdesignz.com

lastly what are your plans for the future?
My future plans are to enjoy life as I do now;) I will always be creating, it's what I do... however what items evolve out of my head... well that's anyone's guess, I am actually pretty excited to see what comes next myself! Mayhem Fest 2009

I went with the boy to Mayhem last Tuesday. I wanted to go only to see Marilyn Manson, I have been a fan since 7th grade (and I'm on my 10 year reunion!) so I thought it was about time I saw him!

The day was filled with tons of metal bands...some were ok, others were not. It was nice to see trivium, cannibal corpse, and kill switch engage. But Manson to me was the best, even though soooo many people left right after slayer, heh.

I was front row right after the pit...good I hate being distracted with jerks that like to punch you out of the way, so i was fine with not being in the pit. I wanted to enjoy this show!

I was very excited that he playied all his old stuff, I had stopped buying albums after hollywood so it was god to know everything he played.

I took my moms crap camera, but still got some ok shots. I'm happy

PA Trip

So last weekend I took a trip with my friend Jayne Riot to vist a good friend in PA. I also booked a photo shoot with Brian Burk Photography Model Kerri Talyor Designer Karen Von Oppen and Make-up artist Designs by LJ . We decided to all meet up at my friends house because she lived in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of old barns, and some creepy abandon places near by. The Settings were amazing. I wish we had more time to shoot. The day flew by. Two Models, two designers, two make-up artist...needless to say it was insanity, but awesome. Me and Karen's designs matched perfectly! The make-up was great, and the shots brian was taking are going to look amazing! I am so happy I got to do this trip and meet some wonderful talented people.
After The barns, we took a trip to Fricks lock, an old abandon town in PA. We were able to shoot 2 outfits before getting kicked out. I wish we had more time there, I had so many ideas and places I wanted to shoot.
So enough talk, here are just a few shots of what the places looked like, and a teaser till I get photos back from brian!

Who Knew Trash could look so Good?

Last year I did a fashion show with nothing but recycled materials. Magazines, popcorn bags, records, the phone book, and trash bags. It was so much fun. I sold my popcorn costume, threw out the paper stuff, but held on to my trash bag out fit. I loved it, but didn't get many good photos of it. About a month ago, Soleil Martine from model Mayhem contacted me about a ally way trash shoot she was doing, and of course I had the perfect thing! Here are a few the photos with Model Jtrash. I got back the first edit from Brian Burk Photography today. The Model, latex ladybug Is beautiful, the make-up came out awesome, but I figured it would cause LJ did it. Over all I like it. Just wish that damn fabric wasn't so light and wrinkled in the wind! lol
I'll be working with him A lot! so much more to come.
Also, I can't wait till I get photos done with him and Jayne Riot! :)

I'm so excited. I just won a box lot of clock parts, and the other day I won a bunch of clock hands. Sounds silly to be excited over this. but I have sold all but one hat with my steampunk gears on them...So It's time to make more! Now I have plenty to last me awhile!

Photo Shoot

Well, in two weeks I'll be doing another huge photo shoot with a few of my favorite girls! We have been planning on going down to Newport. I know of some really great site there. Some abandon to, which is my fav. The only thing I can't decided, is what to bring! Should I do all my new collection..which I need to finish, or should I go with more of my victorian steampunk stuff?
I will be shooting with another photographer, and I think as of right now we have 6 models...So maybe I should bring both?
